Volunteers needed to plant new Miyawaki Forest

Volunteers are needed to help bring Medway's new Miyawaki Forest to life at the Idylbrook Conservation Area.

Children, adults, families, community groups, and volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate.

There are two planting dates in October: Oct. 3 and Oct. 4. There are two sessions on each date: 9-11 a.m. and 12-2 p.m. To sign up, visit https://bit.ly/MiyawakiForestSignUp.

The project is fully funded by the Conservation Commission and will create a lasting natural asset for the community while demonstrating an innovative approach to restoring native forests.

In partnership with BSC Design, the project will establish a 3,000-square-foot native forest featuring hundreds of plants, from understory shrubs to full-canopy trees. Using the Miyawaki planting method, these native species are planted closely together to accelerate natural forest succession, allowing a healthy, diverse forest to establish much more quickly than with traditional planting methods.

To support the new forest, the project will use locally sourced compost and bio-materials collected from Medway's trail system, helping to create healthy soil while reusing natural materials from within the community.
