In a Sept. 9 press release, the Medway Police Department said they, together with the Massachusetts State Police, were investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a bicycle that occurred on Milford Street (Route 109) near the Milford/Medway town line.
"On Tues., Sept. 8, 2026, at approximately 8 p.m., the Medway Police Department responded to the area of Milford Street near Green Street for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist," says the press release.
"Milford Police officers were first to arrive on scene and located an elderly male bicyclist suffering from significant injuries. Milford officers immediately began rendering aid until Medway Police officers arrived and took over care. Medway Fire Department personnel arrived shortly thereafter and continued treatment before transporting the patient to Milford Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
"The bicyclist has been identified as Yuk Foo Chan, age 83, of West Roxbury. Mr. Chan has been a local fixture for many years.
"The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 7:50 p.m., a vehicle traveling eastbound on Milford Street struck Mr. Chan, who was riding his pedal bicycle, and continued eastbound. The operator, whose identity will be withheld until the investigation is complete, was present and cooperative when responding officers arrived.
"The Medway Police Detective Division responded to investigate. The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and Crime Scene Services Section also responded and assisted with investigating and processing the crash scene.
"The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Medway Police Department in coordination with the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office. No arrests have been made at this time. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as appropriate during the ongoing investigation.
"We would like to recognize the police and fire personnel who responded for their immediate efforts to provide emergency care under extremely difficult circumstances, and thank the Milford and Holliston Police Departments for their assistance.
"Chief William Kingsbury and the members of the Medway Police Department extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Chan's loved ones during this difficult time."
The press release was also published on Facebook where the community gathered to remember Mr. Chan, whose family owns the Medway Lotus Restaurant. He was described as "amazing," "a very nice man," and "an inspiration." One person posted, "Mr Chan was unbelievable. I was always amazed at how hard working and active he was. Always smiling;" and another added, "I'm so sad. I saw him almost every day. He worked so hard, even saw him shoveling snow off the Lotus roof once. Rest in peace dear man. You will be greatly missed."
