On Oct. 14, the Millis Senior Center will feature “Farm Girl on the Front Lines: Deborah Sampson’s Secret!” to coincide with the 250th-anniversary year of the start of the Revolutionary War.

Deborah Sampson is the only woman known to have disguised herself as a man and serve as a soldier in the Continental Army without being caught. Guests will learn details of the victories, frustrations, and close calls she experienced as a poor Colonial-era farm girl who risked humiliation and imprisonment to help the colonies free themselves from English rule. 

Deborah will describe her deception strategies, victories, and trip-ups; Colonial constraints imposed upon women; a cave and its hidden stash; and her other “Firsts.” Guests will learn the story behind this principled deception and the character of the humble rebel who pulled it off. 

Janet Parnes, founder of Historical Portrayals by Lady J of Millis, will portray Deborah. Ms. Parnes takes America’s heroines out of history’s dusty archives and brings them to life. (www.women-history.com).
