Last month’s article on the Medway Trails invoked a healthy curiosity about what trails are included in the Medway Tail System.  One popular one, due to its scenic and historic value, is called the Village Street Amphitheater as its natural setting is adjacent to the Charles River.  The trail head is at the end of an easement through the condo complex at the Sandford Mills Condos, and is well worth the effort to navigate.  A picnic table, several bridges, viewing benches, a canoe launch and stunning scenery are just a few rewards the walker/hiker can expect for seeking it out. There is also a beaver dam or two and lovely wildflowers.  

Many of the trees have name plates as to what kind they are, and members of the Medway Trail Club work on the trail frequently to assure that invasive/non-native plants are not strangling out our native plants.  

For a history of the Village Street Amphitheater, be sure to check out the kiosk at the end of the driveway that leads past the Sanford Mills Condominiums and the independent building behind it as it contains some fascinating historical information about how, back in the day, people from the city (i.e. Boston and environs) would travel to Medway to catch an outdoor show or beauty pageant.  A map is included as to how to access the Village Street Amphitheater.  If googling it, please be specific to say “Village Street Amphitheater” as this is not in Choate Park.
